Stadtlabor2Go

Many municipalities face similar challenges: digitalization should be efficient, user-centered, and sustainable. Yet, too often isolated solutions are created that cannot be applied elsewhere. Stadtlabor2Go establishes structures for sharing experiences, pooling resources, and strengthening participation.

What is Stadtlabor2Go?

Stadtlabor2Go is a collaborative project between Mönchengladbach, Wiesbaden, and CityLAB Berlin. With scientific support from TH Köln, new innovation spaces for citizen participation and digital urban development are being created. These are open workshops where participation, prototyping, and knowledge transfer are tested in practice.

What is the goal of Stadtlabor2Go?

The labs serve as low-threshold innovation spaces that actively involve citizens and make modern administrative work tangible. They become real-world labs for service design, prototyping, and co-creation – with a focus on inclusive participation and impact for the common good. The aim is to create a transferable model that can serve as a blueprint for other municipalities.

Who benefits from Stadtlabor2Go?

The labs are aimed at citizens, administrative staff, and actors from academia, business, and civil society.

  • In Wiesbaden, this takes place at the Zukunftswerk in the Luisenforum.

  • In Mönchengladbach, it is the Stadtlabor.mg in the central library.

Both sites combine digital tools with in-person encounters.

How is Stadtlabor2Go implemented?

Stadtlabor2Go builds on the experience of CityLAB Berlin. The labs apply methods such as user testing and prototyping in urban space, are networked through LabCamps, and are accompanied by research – particularly regarding their impact on vulnerable groups. In this way, a practical model is created that offers guidance to other cities.

What’s next for Stadtlabor2Go?

Next steps include further workshops, regular check-ins with both cities, and the preparation of knowledge resources for other municipalities. In the long term, Stadtlabor2Go aims to become a transferable model for the common-good-oriented digitalization and a growing network of municipal labs.

How can people get involved in Stadtlabor2Go?

Whether as a citizen with ideas, as part of the administration seeking exchange, or as an organization interested in cooperation – participation is explicitly encouraged. Events and formats are published on a regular basis.
