Berlin in virtual reality

Smartphones and wearables have ever more power, ushering in a new era for personal navigation outside cars. Within the context of augmented and virtual reality, how can open data and innovative technology help with navigation on unfamiliar streets? In cooperation with Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the city’s public transportation companies, we presented a ‘VR experience’ at the Long Night of Science in 2016 that showed the answer.

The 3-D model of the Stadtmitte underground station is just the beginning. In the long term, we plan to team up with BVG to measure and digitise all of Berlin’s underground stations and release our results as open data. After all, new ideas come from many different directions and with open access to data, innovations can be developed for everyone.
