What is Berlin gärtnert?

From community beds to allotment gardens, Berlin’s gardening initiatives are diverse and shape the cityscape. Berlin gärtnert brings them together on an interactive map, provides open data, and creates a central hub for everyone interested in urban greenery or in getting involved.

Which types of gardens are shown?

The platform features large projects such as Allmende-Kontor at Tempelhofer Feld, as well as small initiatives that began in backyards or on traffic islands and have become neighborhood meeting points.

It covers the full spectrum:

  • Community gardens for shared planting and harvesting

  • Kindergarten and school gardens that introduce children to nature and food

  • Adopt-a-bed projects caring for small public green spaces

  • Self-harvest gardens rented and cultivated seasonally

  • Parklets and school gardening centers as creative uses of public space

  • Traditional allotments for recreation and cultivation

Each category has its own symbol, making the diversity of green spaces visible at a glance.

How can the map be explored?

The application offers detailed views with location data, project status, size, and use types. For example, the Neue Grünstraße community garden in Berlin-Mitte covers 500 m² and, since 2016, has served food growing, recreation, and social exchange. Filters support searches by garden type or district; tools like distance measurement and coordinate search make the map useful for planning and education.

How does the city benefit?

Berlin gärtnert consolidates previously scattered information and makes it accessible to everyone—from schools and city administrations to residents. Those who want to visit or start a garden project can quickly find relevant resources through reusable open municipal data. The platform also underscores urban gardens as spaces for community, climate resilience, and biodiversity.

Who develops and maintains the platform?

Berlin gärtnert was developed by the Open Data Information Office Berlin (ODIS) in cooperation with the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and the Environment. Partners include gruppe F – Freiraum für alle GmbH and georg+georg GmbH. Datasets come from current surveys by the Senate Department. The platform is built on the open-source Masterportal framework, with source code available on GitHub.
